Blending in and getting through the day

Tuesday. I seriously woke up this morning thinking it was Wednesday but how could it only be Tuesday.

Last night during reading sprints, a big topic was a new book out that is HUGELY hyped at the moment and how library holds for it are in months rather than weeks. I'd seen reviews about it mostly raves but some "meh". I wasn't going to read it because while I love fantasy, I'm not a huge fan of dragons. Well, last night I volunteered to read it and report back to the group. Read it so they don't have to.

Currently reading FOURTH WING by Rebecca Yarros. 1st of fantasy series.

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away... because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant. She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret. Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.

Published 2023; 662 pages. After so many same-same things, I decided to make a game for myself to make notes (Kindle) as I go of which "vibes" from other books/movies I'm experiencing. So far: Wonder Woman, definitely Hunger Games, Divergent, Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo, Avatar. Imagine if Prim instead of Katniss went to the games, that's our main character. Different factions like Divergent and you can only choose one. There was one character introduced that I knew immediately was wearing the proverbial Red Shirt (Star Trek). Yep. My first impression is that perhaps the hype is similar to the Harry Potter phenomenon. If this were your first introduction to fantasy, then it has a bigger impact. If you've read a lot and for longer ... probably not as much.I'm not disliking it, but it may be too early to tell

Being June on the Range, I asked if this book could count as a Fantasy Western because of riding dragons.

Tonight, more reading after taking care of the boys in my life.

 Have a good day

Much love,
