Monday
I did read a lot during the four days. I didn't do very much crocheting at all. But I read. I'm afraid to say in fear of jinxing myself but I think the reading slump is ovahh!
I read in one day - partly during the five hour sprints - IS SHE REALLY GOING OUT WITH HIM by Sophie Cousens. Stand alone romance from the library.
Columnist Anna Appleby has left her love life behind after a painful divorce. Who needs a man when she has two kids, a cat, and uncontested control of the TV remote? Besides, she’d rather be single than subject herself to the hell of online dating. But her office rival is vying for her column, and no column means no stable source of income. In a desperate attempt to keep her job, Anna finds herself pitching a unique angle: seven dates, all found offline, chosen by her children. From awkward encounters to unexpected connections, Anna gamely begins to put herself out there, asking out waiters, the mailman, and even her celebrity crush. But when a romantic connection appears where she least expected it, will she be brave enough to take another chance on love?
Published 2024; 367 pages. 4 stars
I finished DARK SPACE by Rob Hart and Alex Segura. 5 stars.
I read THE AFFAIR OF THE CHRISTMAS CARD KILLER by Jack Murray. 1st of 7 in Kit Aston historical mystery series. For scavenger hunt prompt.
Christmas 1919, Lord Arthur Cavendish has received a card saying, 'Happy Christmas, I've killed you'. When Lord Cavendish is found dead, Kit Aston, a WWI hero, Secret Intelligence Service spy and amateur sleuth, investigates. As the snow falls at Cavendish Hall, tensions rise for the isolated party guests when they realize one of them may be a killer.
Published 2018; 355 pages. 4 stars. It was a very slow start - as in, it took until almost half way through to get to the death. But I also didn't mind it. I liked the characters and the setting, upstairs and downstairs. I'll read more in the series.
I started WHAT CHILD IS THIS? by Alice K. Boatwright. 2nd of 3 in Ellie Kent series.
Newlywed American Ellie Kent is looking forward to her first English village Christmas, but a missing Oxford student and an abandoned baby soon draw her away from the fireside into danger. When a body is discovered on Boxing Day, Ellie comes to believe that all these events may be linked through a group of teenage girls who identify with Shakespeare's tragic Ophelia. The police scoff at her theory, so Ellie pursues her own investigation to identify their secret Hamlet, who may be a killer.
Published 2017; 259 pages.
I've started an Advent calendar mystery read. I'm reading it aloud on my spin off Bookeemonster channel, called Tales for Bookeemonsters.
CHRISTMAS AT GLITTER PEAK LODGE by Kjersti Herland Johnsen. Stand alone.
After a traumatic climbing accident, well-known Alpinist Ingrid Berg has returned to the quaint Norwegian village that her family has called home for generations. She’s now ready to put away her ice axe and take over the management of the Glitter Peak Lodge from her aging grandmother, who's no longer up to the task. With Christmas rapidly approaching, guests are expected from both Norway and abroad, and Ingrid is welcomed as the inn's savior. But within short order of Ingrid’s return, complications arise. Leaking pipes. Last-minute cancellations. The resurfacing of a long-buried mystery. And the return of two men from Ingrid's past. Will Ingrid be able to keep the inn alive, or will her family's legacy be lost forever?
